After going through the legal fuss to “liberate” the trademarked “Taco Tuesday” phrase, Taco Bell is celebrating in two ways—first, by offering free Doritos Locos tacos and then by picking up the tab for taco orders placed with local Mexican restaurants.

All Taco Bell locations will be offering one free Doritos Locos Taco to each customer on the next four Tuesdays—Aug. 15, Aug. 22, Aug. 29 and Sept. 5, no purchase necessary.

On Sept. 12, Taco Bell in partnership with DoorDash is opening a $5 million taco tab to cover a portion of customer orders from any participating vendor selling Mexican food. The offer will not be available in New Jersey, where Gregory's Restaurant still holds the “Taco Tuesday” trademark for that state.

The fight over the “Taco Tuesday” trademark ended last month when original holder Taco John’s opted to give up its claim to the phrase, citing high legal fees to defend it. Taco Bell argued that the phrase was too ubiquitous to be trademarked, and even launched a campaign with LeBron James to “liberate” the phrase for wide use. Taco John’s used the publicity to donate $40,000 to Children of Restaurant Employees (CORE), which provides financial support to those who work in the restaurant industry and have children. The Taco Bell Foundation said it matched the donation.

Taco Bell will promote the free tacos and tab pick-up on its social media accounts, but a Taco Bell representative did not respond to a question about any additional marketing details or plans.

For the Doritos Locos giveaway, customers opting for delivery must order through the Taco Bell app, add the Doritos Locos Taco to their cart and input a code at checkout.
